stop depriving non-white actors opportunities to act and get recognized!
Voice actors often don’t know who they’re reading for or what franchise they’re in (that’s what the strike was recently about, so they’d know whether they were in a small first time game or the 4th installment of a major franchise, if they were replacing a beloved voice actor, etc.) so please don’t harass the actors, until recently they legally didn’t have the right to know who they were reading for and were usually not told until months or even years later.
Definitely go after casting, directors, and studios executives. Those are the people making the decisions.
They still don’t have the right to know. They got fucking nothing out of that strike. They can know the code name (which might be a serial number or whatever) and if it’s a sequel. That’s it. That’s the extent of the “transparency” they won from the strike.
As a perfect example of this controversy, if you haven’t looked up interviews surrounding Laura Bailey as Nadine Ross, it’s worth it.
Laura Bailey herself explained that when she auditioned for the role, she was given no information about what the character looked like. It was only after she was hired and arrived for recording that she was shown concept art and discovered the character was a WOC. She was uncomfortable about the situation.
Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann revealedthat they were already working on concept art of the character when they hired Laura Bailey. They finalized the character’s design as a WOC after they’d hired a white voice actress, so that was a conscious decision. He was also very flippant about the situation as a whole.
Like people above have said: Yes, whitewashed casting is a legitimate and real issue. But unlike actors in film and stage, voice actors are often totally blind to what they’re auditioning for. They get fucked by NDAs and legal red tape bullshit. Go after the casting directors and execs and high-position game devs that knowingly make these decisions.

They’re black because their ancestors lived in a equatorial, arid region for ten thousand years and their bodies darkened to protect their
cellular structure from solar radiation.
People are tan because their ancestors either A) lived closer to the poles but still close enough to the equator to need darker skin tones or B) they lived on a coastline and fish was a huge part of their diet.
People are light because their ancestors lived very close to the poles and did not have a large seafood diet and needed lighter skin to absorb more sunlight so they can produce the essential Vitamin D.
That’s right. Your skin tone is because of an essential need for Vitamin D. The more sunlight you get, the darker your skin gets. The less, the lighter.
So an elf can be darker skinned because every world has a fucking sun and elves need Vitamin D too.

I think what people are saying is that impressing racial characteristics on fantasy race is inherently awkward. Notice how OP is talking about “Asian” but later on we’re talking about skin color. Asian people are not defined solely by their skin color, there are other visual cues involved, same with “African” people.
Nobody sane is going to argue that you can’t have a dark skinned elf. Drow have been part of fiction since forever and Svartarlfs are notable in Norse mythology. But these are elves who have literal black skin, not the tones we see in African people.
What people are talking about is the visual markers that distinguish these racial groups and then imposing them on a fictional race. Not just skin color. You need an actual reason why this occurs because elves are not human beings and, therefore, would not evolve similar visual traits as humans, ESPECIALLY when you start getting magic involved.
And I say this as someone who is actively creating a fantasy setting with elves who take the visual traits from humans because, in my setting, elves literally adapt to blend into human society better, yet there is still always something ‘off’ about those borrowed traits and how you can’t ever mistake an unmasked elf for a human. Ever.

I feel like arming police with firearms would eventually lead to citizens having access to firearms too and we have enough issues with violence as it is without adding guns into the mix where the only purpose of a gun is to kill or injure. We just don’t need that shit with the current violent climate we have, especially in London.
